About Us

Our History

Abiding Faith began in a living room in 1998, reaching out into our community with the good news of Jesus Christ. By His blessing, our church was built in 2006 and expanded in 2013 with our Children’s Ministry Addition.

We are:

  • Generous by giving our time, talents, and treasures to the community in and around us.
  • Equipped by being each member being directly involved in one or more ministries, according to their time and talent.

Our Beliefs

There are over 70 churches in Smyrna with affiliations like Baptist, Church of Christ, and non-denominational.   There is only one Lutheran church in Smyrna, however. How are we different?

We believe:
  • God’s Word is 100% true and without error. All of Scripture is God-breathed (2 Timothy 3:16). There are no “major” or “minor” doctrines or “essential” or “non-essential” teachings. All of His Word is truth (John 17:17).
  • We are honest and transparent about our condition. We are conceived in sin (Psalm 51:5), unable to save ourselves (Ephesians 2:8-9), and destined for eternal death (Romans 6:23).
  • Faith is God’s gift, not man’s action. Faith comes from hearing the message  (Romans 10:17) and the Holy Spirit creates faith in our hearts (2 Thessalonians 2:13,14).
  • We do good works out of thanks to God! God creates us to do good works (Ephesians 2:10) and gives us strength (Galatians 2:20) to live lives of humble service to Him.
  • As Christians, we still sin and daily need forgiveness. We daily sin (Galatians 5:17) and are not perfect. That’s ok! By the grace of God, we are restored (Titus 2:14) to live a new life in Christ (2 Cor 5:15).
  • Because of Christ’s love, we serve our families, our community, and our world.  Titus 3:8 and Galatians 6:10
This is only a very brief summary of the Bible’s teachings. An expanded confession of faith is available here.

Our Pastor

Pastor Schleis enjoys meeting people where they are at – and helping them along through life’s trials.
He meets members and visitors at church, the gym, the coffee house, their home – wherever he can meet to listen to them and help them with the Word of God.
Pastor Schleis has a M.A. in Divinity from Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary and is currently pursuing a second M.A. in Pastoral Theology from the same Seminary. He previously served congregations in Georgia and Wisconsin.
In his spare time, he enjoys time with his wonderful wife and 3 children, bird watching, basketball, and bonfires.

Contact him at abifaith@comcast.net or 615-220-9258.

Here are some answers to common questions about worship at Abiding Faith.

Where should I sit?
Feel free to sit wherever you like, whether in the front or in the back. If you need any assistance our ushers would be happy to assist you.

What should I wear?
Come as you are - we aren't worried about what you are wearing.  We're thankful you are joining us in worship today.

What about my children?
We welcome your children to join us in worship. Pastor invites the small children forward each week for a brief Children's Sermon.

If you like, we have a Nursery available (children ages 0-3) where they will be cared for during the service.

What about the offering?
Members of Abiding Faith have joined together to do the Lord's work here in Rutherford County and worldwide. Our guests should not feel obligated to partcipiate in this offering that supports our ministry.

What about worship?
Our entire order of service is printed for you in a bulletin and clearly marked so you can follow along. Feel free to participate as you are comfortable. Don't worry - we won't ask you to stand up and introduce yourself to the congregation, or anything like that.

What about after the service?
After worship, we greet each other and enjoy some fellowship. If you like, we provide coffee, water, juice, cookies, and other snacks after worship. Please enjoy some, and the time we spend together.
