Paraments in liturgical colors decorate the altar to signify the season of the Church Year. Color has a symbolic meaning that helps to set the tone for each worship service. The standard colors and their basic uses are:

Green reminds us of growth. We use it during the non-festival portion of the church year to represent the growth of our faith as we study God's word and our sure hope for eternal life with God in heaven.

Red, reminiscent of the presence of the Holy Spirit, is used on
Pentecost, for Mission Festival, and other days the work of the Holy Spirit is celebrated.

Blue for the anticipatory season of Advent (4 weeks before Christmas), when we look forward to the celebration of our Savior's birth.

Violet for the preparatory season of Lent (6 weeks before Easter), when we contemplate our innocent Savior's suffering and death to pay for our sins.
The altar is left undecorated for Holy Week, Ash Wednesday, and Good Friday.

White signifies purity and glory. We use it to celebrate festivals of Christ, including: Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Epiphany, the Baptism of Our Lord, The Transfiguration of Our Lord, Easter Sunday, and the Ascension of Our Lord.
The schedule of parament colors can be found beginning on page 157 of Christian Worship: A Lutheran Hymnal, found in each of the pews.
